Rosa damascena is the rose most commonly used in perfumery. The main rose-producing countries are Turkey, Bulgaria and Morocco. The bushes flower once a year, from May to June. The flowers are harvested by hand and distilled or extracted within 24 hours of picking. One hectare of land can produce 3.5 to 5 tonnes of flowers, enough to produce around 1 kg of oil.
