Native to North America, sunflower is an annual plant of the Asteraceae family. It is widely cultivated for its edible seeds and the oil they contain, but also as fodder, an ornamental plant and, less commonly, as “green manure.” Along with canola and olive, sunflower is one of the most common sources of cooking oil in Europe.
