Originally native to Central Asia, rye is an annual plant of the Secale genus belonging to the Poaceae family. It is cultivated as a grain crop or fodder and is especially well-suited to poor soils and cold climatic conditions. It is cultivated mainly in Eastern Europe, and on a much smaller scale elsewhere.
