LABDANUM
Description
Cistus labdanum is a shrub that grows wild in many parts of the Mediterranean Basin. The plant is remarkable for the gum that it secretes in the summer to protect itself from the intense heat. Today cistus is harvested mainly in southern Spain. The leaves and branches are either distilled or extracted to produce cistus extracts.

Today cistus is harvested mainly in southern Spain. The leaves and branches are either distilled or extracted to produce cistus extracts.
Taking into account the inclusion of environmental and social principles in the major perfumers’ sourcing policies, combined with the support of the EU and the Spanish regional authorities, Biolandes invested in a new gum production unit in 2013. The new installation offers better control over the environmental and social aspects of labdanum gum production. In particular, all of the wastewater is treated, and the processes are carried out in an enclosed space with no direct human intervention.
