Guarana is a vine of the Sapindaceae family native to the Amazon region of Brazil. The red berries it produces contain seeds with an especially strong concentration of caffeine, making it the plant with the highest known caffeine content. A unique product of the South American tropical forests, the berries are harvested in September and sun-dried. The seeds are then removed and their caffeine is extracted for use in beverages and food supplements.
