Native to the United States, the red cedar (also called the Virginian juniper) is a species of juniper belonging to the Cupressaceae family. It grows in the eastern regions of North America as well as southwestern France. It can reach a height of 20 meters at maturity and live for 200 years. In particular, it is a source of shelter and food for a rare butterfly called the juniper hairstreak.
