Description
Basil is a species of herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family, cultivated mainly as an aromatic plant and a culinary condiment. Native to Southern Asia, this hardy plant with aromatic leaves grows mainly in sunny regions. It was imported to Egypt at least 4,000 years ago. Now grown around the world, it remains closely associated with Asian and Mediterranean culture and gastronomy. Ocimum basilicum L. essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the aerial part of the plant.
