The argan tree is a member of the Sapotaceae family endemic to Morocco and Algeria. In those countries it plays a key role in preventing soil erosion and the encroachment of the Sahara Desert, and represents an important economic resource for local communities. In 1988 a UNESCO Argan Biosphere Reserve was created in Morocco’s Souss-Massa region. Local communities use the fruits to produce argan oil, which has many applications in cuisine, the pharmaceuticals industry and cosmetics.
