Agarwood is the essential oil (or butter) of Aquilaria wood, also called Eaglewood.
Several species of aquilaria trees grow in Southeast Asia, in a region that spans from India (Assam) to Indonesia and Vietnam. The most common species are Aquilaria agallocha and Aquilaria crassna. The tree has the special characteristic of reacting to damage, caused by lightning, insects, fungi, cutting, etc., by forming localized concretions of an extremely fragrant, dense, colored wood.

These concretions have been known and prized since antiquity, and Agarwood is traded extensively between its producer countries and the markets of the Middle East, where it is burned as an incense. Because their wood commands such a high price, the trees have been over-logged and are now rare in primary forests. Today the harvesting and export of Agarwood are subject to CITES regulations.
Our Agarwood comes from sustainable plantations in Laos. The essential oil is obtained by distilling wood chips after a long maceration phase.
